Ecuador has a very complicated political history which
has resulted in an unstable political climate. There has been 29 changes
of government since 1960 and 9 changes in the last 10 years, with
another running at the end of 2006. 70% of the countries population of
13.4 million suffer from poverty.
About 70-80% of children suffer to the point that it
effects their ability to learn. Much of the country is uninhabitable due
to its terrain resulting in settlements being large and dense - housing
usually about 70,000 people.
|
|
Many of the settlements are shanty towns (slums), housing
is very poor and lack clean water and will accommodate sometimes three
family generations. But the shanty towns are full of life and hope, the
people really do appreciate the fact that someone in another country
takes the time to think of them and cares. |
